NaPoWriMo Day 0 Prompt 1

April is National Poetry Monty
and also National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo)
Therefore I will endeavor to write (and post!) a poem a day for the month of April
And I will take a moment also to encourage everyone else to write a poem a day for the month of April, the point is to write, whether it is the best poem in the world or not is not important, what is important, besides the gratuitous use of commas, is that a poem is written, every poem written makes the world a slightly better place regardless of how it is judged

for those keeping track I did not post many haiku in February (National Haiku Writing Month) but I did write them, so the world is technically a better place now

So to start with, here is a writing prompt from Chris Jarmick ( and the quotes that came before the prompt which I incorporated:

“There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you
it’s going to be a butterfly.”
– Buckminster Fuller

“How does one become a butterfly” she asked pensively. “You must want to fly so much that you are willing to give up being a caterpillar.”
– Trina Paulus

Topic: Hawaiian Shirts:

fuzzy and fat

I can relate
to that

inch along
day by day

seeking the one Hawaiian shirt
that wings
are made of

the one
Ray Bradbury wrote about
each strand a scene
come alive
capturing senses
in the slightest breeze

or was that a tattoo?

wings of skin unfurl
in psychedelic slide-show
leaving dermal cocoon behind
every grain of wing-dust
a butterfly

in Irish mythology
Delan De
the white butterfly
when you see her
in a dream
no harm can come to you there

and for a bonus display of editing prowess:

inches along day by day
seeking the one Hawaiian shirt
that wings are made of

also, for those of you who are thinking of telling me to moth-ball this poem, I thought the same thing, therefore you are thinking like me and you may want to seek professional help for that 🙂
