Hawaiian Style Chant

Traditional Hawaiian poetry is an oral endeavor. Forms are very loosely structured, but there are certain elements which reoccur frequently. Repetition matters more than strict rhyme or meter, metaphors contain multiple layers of meaning, there is an indirect linking between the last word of a section and the first word of the next section and lists of opposite terms are often used.

light from the sky
darkness from within

within a dying star
a living shadow

the world continues to spin

jumping for joy
digging for truth

learning the day
living the night

the world continues to spin

longing for peace
living for a price

buying a continuance
afraid of the end

the world continues to spin
