Tanka

Tanka were the favorite means in the imperial Japanese court 1,300 years ago for lovers to convey clandestine messages to one another. They are usually five lines with a 5, 7, 5, 7, 7 onji pattern. Often overtly emotional, they just as often convey hidden messages within natural symbolism that only the intended recipient understands.
